California remains one of the leading states to enact progressive cannabis laws, and laws are constantly changing and evolving. It is critical that your cannabis applications for permits and licenses continue to reflect the current California legal climate as outlined by MAUCRSA.

The “Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act” (MCRSA) was enacted in 2015 and 2016 when a series of bills passed the California State Legislature. MCRSA created the three main licensing authorities in California: the Bureau of Cannabis ControlCalCannabis Cultivation Licensing, and the Manufactured Cannabis Safety Branch). In 2016, California voters approved Proposition 64: The “Adult Use of Marijuana Act” (AUMA), allowing California adults 21 years of age or older to legally grow, possess, and use cannabis for non-medicinal purposes (with certain restrictions). Additionally, AUMA legalizes the sale and distribution of cannabis through a regulated business. In June 2017, the MCRSA and AUMA were consolidated into the “Medicinal and Adult Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act” (MAUCRSA), and this is now the foundation of regulated cannabis in California. MAUCRSA creates California’s framework for the licensing, regulation, and enforcement of the commercial cannabis industry.
